Instead of forcing a customer to purchase what already came pre-packaged in a box, they thought it would be a good idea to allow each individual to choose the motor style and finish, and then allow customization for which blade finish best matched their home interior. They also realized that not everyone needs a light kit included so they began to package the light separately on many models. Packaging a fan without a light kit does two things. First, it doesn't force someone to pay for something they may not need. Second, for those that do need a light, it allows them to be able to choose the illumination option that best fits their personal style.

Allowing the customer to custom design a ceiling fan was something new in the fan industry then, and still not common practice today, but it sure is a big upgrade from the common ceiling fan shopping experiences at big box retailers, such as Lowe's and Home Depot.
