Quality Outdoor Ceiling Fans

Does your outdoor living space need more airflow? Then installing quality outdoor ceiling fans will be the perfect addition to get the job done. But which exterior location approval will you need to select between a damp rated and a wet rated outdoor model? That is dependent upon what is above the location where your new fan will be installed.

When to Use a Damp Rated Fan

If you're looking to install a traditional design, modern, or even a large ceiling fan for more airflow on your porch, patio, or covered deck, you will only need a model that is UL listed for use in damp locations, also known as a damp rated ceiling fan. The key thing to remember is, if your location is covered by a roof then you know you'll be okay with the type of outdoor ceiling fan. A little misting or blowing rain is not a concern, as long as direct rainfall isn't coming down from directly above the installation area.

When To Use Wet Rated Models

If the location where your new overhead fan will be installed is an open roofed pergola, or any other type of structure where it may get direct rainfall from above the hanging area, and I'm not talking about a little blowing rain here and there, but rainfall that will be constantly beating down from above, then you will need a wet location ceiling fan.

The Difference Is: Wet = Waterproof, Damp = Only Moisture Resistant

The difference between the ratings is the way the motors and other electrical components are sealed, and in some cases, the type of blades being used.

For example, the Gulf Coast Bamboo Raindance is completely sealed off to prevent water from entering in from above. This outdoor fan can handle heavy rains coming straight down onto it from the top without allowing water to get inside of the motor or other electrical components. It comes with ABS (Acrylonitrile Autadiene Styrene) blades, which is a special plastic material that is heat resistant up to 212 degrees, allowing them to be completely warp resistant under any natural sort of heat wave. All of these features is what makes the Bamboo Raindance an outdoor wet rated ceiling fan.

An example of a damp rated ceiling fan would be the TroposAir Mustang II. This model uses dual motors that can be tilted to throw airflow in a wide, or a slender downward pattern, depending on the angles the motors are tilted at. They can be adjusted whichever way best suits your needs. The blades on this one are made of a sealed walnut wood, and they will not warp due to dampness. Yet, since these blades are not plastic, they are not made to withstand direct downpours of rain, like their plastic counterparts. Although this is one of our more unique ceiling fans for patios and covered decks, its motors are not sealed completely from keeping water out if there no sealed roof overhead. Therefore, it should only be used outside on a covered location. It will still resist humidity and blowing mist from rain during heavy storms, but it is not made to handle direct water pouring in from above the fan, therefore, this it is only UL damp rated.

Remote Controls Also Available

Once you've found your choice of styling, why not make controlling your new machine as easy as possible? Some may already include hand-held or in-wall remote controls, while others have pull chain speed control switches, but who wants to deal with having to get up out of the hammock to slow down their fan when the afternoon sun begins to settle? Therefore, even if you chose a design that does not come standard with a remote, you can easily add one as an accessory. They are available for every exterior ceiling fan we offer.
