Many people and fan retailers think of large ceiling fans as anything above 60 inches in diameter. However, these days, 60" ceiling fans are just an average size, and with 3-blade ceiling fans becoming more popular in modern designs 60" fans do not look very big at all. To us, when we think of large ceiling fans we think of models with blades spans of at least 72". But what if for your space 72" or even 84” ceiling fans are not be big enough. Therefore, many manufacturer’s have begin producing fans with blades spans of 96 inches and longer.

At ModernFanOutlet.com we are committed to providing our customers with the best customer service, and information available before and after a purchase. Therefore, in this blog post we will shed light on which 96” and up models are not only big in stature, but also have strong motors, and quality construction. We will tell you which models are best, right now in 2019, and which fans to steer clear from, because there are many imposters out there these days that look the part, but lack the performance and quality to play the part.

Best Ceiling Fans - 96 Inch Blade Spans and Above

We would like to begin with the model we feel is hands down the best fan in this size range that has ever been built, and surprisingly, it is not the most expensive of the group. The 96” Liberator ceiling fan by TroposAir has no rival when it comes to pure performance, or air moving capability. Coming in at an estimated 16,900 cubic feet per minute of airflow (and that’s being conservative) and the most windspeed of any of the larger ceiling fan models. This model is a clear favorite for those seeking the best cooling windchill affect in this class of fans. It comes in the standard finishes that the other oversized competitors are available in, Oil Rubbed Bronze and Brushed Nickel, but the 96” Liberator is the only one of these really big fans that is available in a clean and simplistic Pure White finish. The finish is perfect for upscale contemporary living spaces.

96” Liberator Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Most airflow
  • Energy efficient, high performance DC motor
  • High-end extruded aluminum blades
  • Outdoor damp rated
  • Easy to use remote control

  • Cons:

  • Only 5 speeds, whereas most larger fans like this usually offer 6
  • Not wet rated so that it can be used without a roof above

  • The next best choice is the 120” Hydra by Modern Forms. The Hydra is not only big, and moves a lot of airflow, without having to spin very fast, but also comes with the most high-tech control options of any ceiling fan produced. Not only does the Hydra come with a sleek in-wall control, but, straight out of the box, this fan is set up to work with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Nest and other voice control apps. It also easily connects to WiFi, and works on a cloud that allows full control of the fan from any smart device, even if no where near the fan and on vacation across the country.

    120” Hydra Pros and Cons

    Pros:

  • Nice airflow
  • Energy efficient, high performance DC motor
  • Smart Fan - most technological advanced ways to control it of any of ceiling fan
  • High-end extruded aluminum blades
  • Outdoor wet rated
  • LED light included with cover plate included if light is not wanted

  • Cons:

  • Learning curve with setting up advanced control features
  • Airflow is good, but we feel it could be more considering it has a 10 foot blade span

  • The Fanimation 96” Stellar ceiling fan comes in third on our list. The Stellar is a distant second to the 96” TroposAir Liberator, but actually the next best of all the 96 inch to 120 inch ceiling fans for best airflow volume when measured in cubic feet per minute. Therefore, if we were only rating fans based on performance, this model would have come second on our list overall.

That said, this Fanimation ceiling fan is the only model in its size to have a variable speed remote control included. Not five speeds, not six, but absolutely low to high and anywhere in between. It’s great for those wanting that perfect level of comfort, if that isn’t achieved with the usual six speeds. It is also UL wet location rated, so that it can be used anywhere you could ever want to install a fan. And lastly, the 96 inch Stellar ceiling fan comes in Black or Silver, and is the only larger model that will allow one to mix-and-match blade to motor finish combinations to create a customized look.

    96” Stellar Pros and Cons

    Pros:

  • Excellent Airflow
  • Energy efficient, high performance DC motor
  • Variable speed settings
  • High-end extruded aluminum blades
  • Outdoor wet rated
  • Easy to use remote with in-wall remote available

  • Cons:

  • Price is the most of the 96 inch fans

  • The next fan is the most affordable 120 inch ceiling fan on the market today (at least from any one of them worth owning) yet it still packs a lot of quality, from a trusted name brand. The 120” Windswept by Craftmade fills a lot of space and cost under $1,000.00. Like the others, it provides a lot of airflow efficiently by the use of a high-performance DC motor. The modern industrial styling and large size, at an affordable price, makes the Windswept one of our most popular models in the 96 inch and above size category.

    120” Windswept Pros and Cons

    Pros:

  • 10 foot blade span at an affordable price
  • Good airflow
  • High performance DC motor
  • Extruded aluminum blades
  • UL damp outdoor rated
  • Easy to use remote included

  • Cons:

  • Not wet rated so that it can be used without a roof above

  • Another Modern Forms ceiling fan rounds out our top 5 best list of 96 inch and larger ceiling fans. It is the same fan as the 120” Hydra, only 96 inch in diameter. The Modern Forms 96” Hydra ceiling fan. Like its bigger brother, the 96” Hydra packs all of the same smart technology features. The only difference it is gives another size option just in case the 120 inch model is too big for the space, or, in some instances, where a bigger fan is needed for one area, and a slightly smaller matching version is needed for another.

    96” Hydra Pros and Cons

    Pros:

  • Nice airflow
  • Energy efficient, high performance DC motor
  • Most technological advanced ways to control it of any of these bigger fans
  • High-end extruded aluminum blades
  • Outdoor wet rated
  • LED light included with cover plate included if light is not wanted

  • Cons:

  • Learning curve with setting up advanced control features

Models and Brands Not Up to Par

Due to the popularity of these oversized air movers today, many lesser quality brands have begin producing knock-offs of the higher end brand models. Although many of these knock-off fans look the part, they don’t back it up in quality and performance. In sort, they are big, but the airflow is small. In rare cases a person may not care about airflow, but in the majority of cases, the main purpose for a large fan like these is to move air.

The prices should be evident and tell you all you need to know about the quality of these look-a-like fans. In this industry we have always found that you will always get what you pay for.

I really wish our customer service team had some recordings of past conversations with folks that purchased the off-brand oversized fans, many with even good internet reviews, so that I could post the recordings here. We get at least one call every week from someone that has been taken, and is now stuck extra for another installation by trying to go the cheap route. Many of those calls have language included that I will not share here, but let’s just say we are very happy the language we’ve have heard wasn’t directed towards us… LOL!

Brands like Big Air Fans, that use an uncreative name, in an attempt to mimic the company that started this big fan revolution (Big Ass Fans) is one of the winners in the do not waste your time paying to have one installed category. Usually, if we get a phone call as mentioned above, we will call this brand out by name, along with one other, and the reply typically is, "How did you know?" The other brand that we can guess the name of is Home Decorators Collection.

Wow, now that name has some very strange findings if dug deep into. The name seems to be part of Home Depot, as Home Depot and Amazon are the only two places they tend to be found online at. We think they are coming from a cheap source in China, and rebranded under the name of Home Decorators Collection once here in the United States.

Thanks to that “brand” name, I have learned that “Verified Purchase” reviews are not always really from real purchasers. Before this, I always thought if a review says “Verified Buyer” that it was legit. We use a third party to collect verified buyer reviews on our site, so that the reviews cannot be manipulated, and I thought that was the same with any verified purchase review, but I was wrong. Yotpo is the company we use if you ever want to do some research on how we collect reviews.

After hearing so much negative feedback from people calling to order replacement fans, that work as intended, to replace the Home Decorators Collection fans, we found it very odd that the name had so many positive, and very long and detailed reviews, mostly on Home Depot’s website. We found the vast number of reviews in themselves odd, considering we have models that we easily sell 1,000 or more each year, some for the past 6 years, and yet we may be lucky if we have 15 total reviews for those products. It seems the most people don't think to go back and leave a review unless they are upset with the purchase. If we do see a review, from a real buyer, the review is typically really short and to the point, like, "Great ceiling fan. Moves a lot of air. Exactly what we were looking for." Therefore, we thought to ourselves, "Why so many reviews for one certain brand, and why do the reviews look more like short novels, complete with photos and videos? Why just with that brand, and not nearly as many for the other brands sold at the same website?" And finally, we may have figured it out...

According to a person we spoke to that specializes in search engine optimization (SEO) for websites, it seems that with Google, content is king. He said that many websites pay content writers for these types of reviews, and that they are not real reviews. Although they can be misleading to a potential buyer of a product, that isn’t the intent of fake reviews put out by paid content writers, claiming to be from verified buyers. He said the intent is simply for more content, to help keep the website’s search engine rankings up with search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Thanks! Now, I cannot tell if a review I’m reading online is legit or not, so why waste me time reading them?

That said, and I did not mean to go down that rabbit hole about reviews and such. However, it also upsets me that things like that happen. To make a long story short, Home Decorators Collection is one of the names I would stay away from, regardless of the reviews, if looking for a large ceiling fan for anything other than to look large. According to real customers that we help with their purchases, quality, airflow, and longevity just seems to be missing from those fans.

    In Summary

I hope the best five fans we’ve listed in this article are helpful in helping to make a wise decision if you are looking to purchase a ceiling fan 96 inches or bigger.

My negative ending to the article is in no way designed to scare any reader if they cannot afford the good fans, but only to educate and get one thinking the old school thought - If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Think about it, if one could get an extra large ceiling fan for half the price, that does the same job, and is the same quality as the better brand fans, how do the quality name brands stay in business year after year, while the cheaper off brands always seem to come and go?

My advice to anyone shopping for any ceiling fan is to stick with trusted name brands in the industry. Fanimation, TroposAir and Gulf-Coast, Minka Aire, and Modern Forms seem to be the best of the best these days. Craftmade and Casablanca are very good too. Casablanca just hasn’t gotten into the extra large fan market as of this date. Although Casablanca and Hunter are the same company these days, as for the Hunter division, well, let me just put it this way, I just wish they were still owned by Robbins and Myers, so that they were made like the models prior to their buyout in 1984.
